Chairman's Report on the 2017 Egham Royal Show

I’m glad to report that we enjoyed the sunshine on the August bank holiday weekend in 2017. We did have some concerns as the rain in mid August did make Mrs Caddey’s Field unsuitable for heavy traffic during the build up but careful management on access meant the show ground was kept in reasonable condition before, during, and just as importantly, on breakdown of the show.
This year we were assisted by Surrey 4x4 Response, a group of volunteers who use their own vehicles to assist in emergency conditions. We put them to good use with controlling access to the showground, car parking duties, various jobs during build up and breakdown and also assisting in the rescue of one or two vehicles that got stuck on the showground. They had their own display area which attracted a lot of interest and we hope they will become a regular part of the show.
I’d like to remind everyone that the show is run entirely by unpaid volunteers who give their time freely and I’m especially proud of all the younger members involved who I hope will become the future of the show. For example Jerry Brownlee and I have introduced a number of young volunteers over the last 10 years. Emma Travers is now responsible for the show programme and raffle, Matthew Jones has stepped up to the mark and offered to take over from John Bonnett as our Treasurer and Amanda Graham will take over from Frances Wood, our retiring Secretary.
Two other volunteers who have been introduced by members are Alfie Weatherly who now takes care of the water supply and Henry Doran who is assisting his father James in the Livestock marquee. This is so important in the continuation of the Egham Show.
Now a lot of people helped to put the show on but I think three people deserve special mention. Dr Brian Perry, Mr Richard Frazer McRobert and Mr Brian Silk for the amount of time these guys spent on the showground during set up, while the show was on and during breakdown. Without their help the show would be a much harder task for us all.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank again Crest Nicholson plc and Procter & Gamble who have been our main sponsors for a numbers of years, their invaluable support is always greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Runnymede on Thames Hotel & Spa for hosting our meetings free of charge, to Royal Holloway University for hosting our pre show reception, to Runnymede Borough Council for the use of Mrs Caddey’s Field, to Marissa Heath, Surrey County Council for her donation, to Nicholas Smith at Barclays Bank and to all the local businesses who support the show.
Finally, I must thank the committee and the volunteers who made the 2017 Egham Royal Show, not only possible, but a great one for us all.

Association Membership

Membership to the Egham & Thorpe Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Association entitles you to:-

  • Attendance at the A.G.M. where you may have a say in the organisation of the show.
  • Vote on any issues and the Election and Re-Election of Officers and Committee;
  • Entry to the Show on both days.
  • Parking in the Members Car Park near to the main Show Entrance and if disabled to park even nearer.
  • Priority to purchase tickets to our Social Events e.g. Annual Dinner
